Huawei and Leica team up to make sure the P9 camera is awesome

Huawei is on its way to becoming one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, but the company knows it has some way to go with its camera tech – so it has enlisted some help by partnering with photography experts Leica.

The partnership was announced today, and it seems that Leica technology will make its way onto smartphones in the near future.

Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer BG said: "Leica is a legend in the world of photography; we believe no other manufacturer has revolutionised the industry as much as them.

"We, Huawei, take the utmost pride in exceptional quality and Leica is in a class of its own in its sector."

Improvements all around

Oliver Kaltner, CEO of Leica Camera AG added: "The technology partnership with Huawei offers Leica Camera an excellent opportunity to introduce its proven optical expertise into a new product segment and to unlock exciting business areas in the field of mobile devices.

"Smartphones make a very important contribution to the world of photography and open an important door for Leica to new target groups and fields of application."

It’s currently uncertain what Huawei device will see the launch of the first Leica camera technology.

Huawei unveiled the MateBook at MWC, but the long rumoured Huawei P9 didn’t make an appearance and it’s possible the technology will be ready for that flagship phone when it’s released.

It will be interesting to see how Huawei’s camera set up improves within this new partnership and what a company with over 100 years of camera experience will do to the growing smartphone photography game.
