Snowflake photo: Ice crown (2400 x 1800)
This snowflake also was processed previously, but it is one of my all-time favorites, so i re-processed it with my current workflow.
This is large snow crystal of star plate type, and we can see that “main idea of it’s design” is combination of hexagons. I like it’s structure and how diffused light from cloudy sky illuminated the crystal. But most unusual and interesting part is pattern inside of central hexagon: it reminds me medieval coat of arms with massive shield and three crossed spears.
10 identical RAW photos, taken as quick series, was aligned and averaged to boost signal-to-noise ratio of this picture. Background: dark woolen fabric, natural light, external optics Helios 44M-5 used as additional magnifier; January 2013, Moscow.
Also, i’ve processed another snowflake with similar, simple and broad arms: High voltage / Gecko’s paw (bright and dark versions of same photo); and here you’ll find another big snowflake with broad arms, captured on dark woolen fabric, like this crystal:
And here is another crystal with interesting central pattern: The beauty of imperfection:
