If you are photographer and want to get the most mileage out of your images, Photocrowd is the site for you. At Photocrowd, photographers can participate in exciting contests as well as assignments, and even create unique portfolios. Photocrowd is also a great resource for interesting articles, in addition to being a place where you can meet other photographers.

Photocrowd began a few years ago as a self-financed endeavor, but which eventually got a financial boost in 2014 from one of its pioneer members. These days, Photocrowd is comprised of a 6 person full-time staff based in Oxford, England, in addition to a support team of part-time freelancers and advisors at large. Currently, the core team is beginning a fresh funding round and a revenue stream for 2016, which they envision to take the company well into 2017.

Photocrowd today is a worldwide brotherhood of photography enthusiasts. They currently have members in 117 countries, who all share their finest work on the site. It is a melting pot where lens men of various nationalities link up, participating in photo challenges among each other.

The site is designed to further differentiate Photocrowd from other photography hosting sites, establishing them as the one-stop-shop for serious photography buffs. They also take pride in their contests which use a hybrid of crowd-voting, and an expert judge. This way a winner is judged both in critical terms and popularity. The participating voters number in the hundreds of thousands. The expert judge on the hand makes a selection and writes a review to help members appreciate their perspective, making it a learning experience.

Photocrowd was born out of a desire and passion to teach photography fundamentals. Feeling that a vast majority of photographers lacked focus for their work, the founders of the site strove to create a community and environment conducive for its participants to be the best they can. With the site’s model for crowd voting and expert judge opinion, adherents get the best of both worlds from their peers.

Photocrowd is also never static, and they envision members launching their own contests and assignments in the near future.  The concept is to ‘push down’ to the members community the ability to facilitate the same projects the site does, with the goal of “one central community into being a community of communities.”
